Forge not recognizing Java 8 install

Using minecraft launcher 1.6.73-j with forge version release 1.10.2-12.18.3.2316.  Mods I want to use required java 8.  Successfully installed java 8 and used adobe verifier to confirm.  However, when I run launcher with forge version provided above it says I am still running java 6.  How do I make it see the current version of java?
