Can anyone get me up to speed?

I hate to ask this, but I've been getting the urge to play Minecraft again lately, but it's been so long, I've forgotten the number game and I can't decide what version of Minecraft to play.

 

Is Thaumcraft still going? Where do I get shaders? Is it playable on the latest version of Forge? What version of Minecraft is the latest version of Forge playable on? Are there some good redstone mods? What is vanilla Minecraft like now? What's with addons? Is the PC version plagued with DLC? Is Tekkit still around?
