Minecraft crashes right where the mojang screen would be when loading. There are no other mods, there is no log, the jar is vanilla, and the META-INF is gone. The only non-vanilla minecraft element is forge.

That is what we need.  :)

That means that Forge was not installed properly.  If Forge is the only thing in the jar then what is your *exact* procedure that you use for installing Forge, every click and every little thing you do, the zip program used, your OS, etc...

I am using ubuntu 12.04 with the archive manager, i clicked and dragged all the files from the extracted 3.3.7 zip into the minecraft jar.

 

It seems that applying it through MC patcher seems to work

      Do you have shaders enabled? There is an issue with the mod simpleclouds - remove this mod or disable shaders, if enabled

      Maybe you need to create file in assets/<modid>/items/<itemname>.json with content like this:   { "model": { "type": "minecraft:model", "model": "modname:item/itemname" } }
