Issue:

After completely clearing out my .minecraft directory I restarted my launcher to create the required launcher_profiles.son file for the Minecraft Forge Installation.

I then proceeded to use the latest recommended universal Forge installer, gave it execute permissions and ran it.

After running the installer it gave me a green light telling me that the install went without a hitch so I opened up the Official Minecraft Launcher that I downloaded directly off of minecraft.net for Debian/Ubuntu.

The launcher shows me the forge 1.12.2 profile but when I attempt to start the game it just tells me that "An unexpected issue occured and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

System details:

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS x64_86

Kernel: 4.18.11-041811-generic

Nvidia Driver details:

Version: 396.54

X.Org Server Version: 1.19.6 (11906000)

GPU: GeForce GTX 980

Java version:

openjdk 10.0.2 2018-07-17
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 10.0.2+13-Ubuntu-1ubuntu0.18.04.2)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0.2+13-Ubuntu-1ubuntu0.18.04.2, mixed mode)

The unmodded version 1.13.1 and 1.12.2 of Minecraft work without issue.

I don't get any crash report file, only the launcher log which you can find attached since it's too large for pastebin :/

This is seriously puzzling to me and this only occured after upgrading Ubuntu to 18.04. (Seriously tho wtf has canonical done to Ubuntu!?!)  Thanks to anyone willing to help me in advance!

You need to use Java 8, Minecraft is trying to use 9+ which removes older functions that Forge 1.12.2 and below rely on.

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

Oh, wow. I had openjdk-11-jre-headless and 8 installed. That solved the issue. Ubuntu 18.04 apparently has 11 installed by default I guess since I don't recall ever installing that. Maybe make the Installer probe the java version and warn you if it's incompatible?

Thank you very much!

(Edit: Even the progress bar for the Installer looks proper now. With 11 it was quite broken)
