No mods will work for me.   They are compatible and are the right version.  I try to load it up, but it will only load the 4 default mods.   What is going wrong?

I am on a Mac

How are you installing Forge?

How are you running Forge?

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

I installed it form the files page on this site and used the installer. Opened up Minecraft, made sure it was under the Forge configuration.

When trying to load in the mod it comes up with this error / output:

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: Ignoring option PermSize; support was removed in 8.0
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: class jdk.internal.loader.ClassLoaders$AppClassLoader cannot be cast to class java.net.URLClassLoader (jdk.internal.loader.ClassLoaders$AppClassLoader and java.net.URLClassLoader are in module java.base of loader 'bootstrap')

    at net.minecraft.launchwrapper.Launch.main(Launch.java:28)

No, you are not. That error is a definite sign of you using Java 9 or newer.

Expand

Java 8  Also, Java 8 is the LATEST version there is no Java 9 or newer. (On my system at least)
