Forge Server on 1.12.2

Right so the GUI works on both vanilla and forge (i.e. double tapping on the jar files)...manually opening the jars using terminal also works on the vanilla but for some reason when i try to run the server with:

 

java -server -Xmx2048M -XX:+UseG1GC -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2838-universal.jar nogui

 

it gives an error. Specifically this:

Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: class jdk.internal.loader.ClassLoaders$AppClassLoader cannot be cast to class java.net.URLClassLoader (jdk.internal.loader.ClassLoaders$AppClassLoader and java.net.URLClassLoader are in module java.base of loader 'bootstrap')

at net.minecraft.launchwrapper.Launch.<init>(Launch.java:34)

at net.minecraft.launchwrapper.Launch.main(Launch.java:28)

now i have searched around and found that i need to downgrade my JDK from 12 to 8. But my issue is is that command works for the vanilla ones its only the forge one that does that.

oh and im on mac running high sierra.

so is that the definite fix for this cuz jdk 8 is archived and theres no way to downgrade on mac and also the startup commands work for vanilla its only the forge jar file that does that

right so i installed the one it said but do you know what the run command for this one is? or like how to run it because using java -jar etc. will still use 12

your a king homie thank you very much. it took me a while to setup jenv and stuff but it worked and now i can switch java versions as well. Although this wouldn't happen if forge gets updated to work with 12

Forge will target what Minecraft targets, and right now that means 8
