NBT Tags with items in Minecraft 1.12

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to learn how to use NBT tags in order to store data on items, but I got stuck on one problem. Data is being stored and whatnot but it isn't stored in the instance of an item, but the item itself

	public ActionResult<ItemStack> onItemRightClick(World worldIn, EntityPlayer playerIn, EnumHand handIn)
			playerIn.getActiveItemStack().setTagCompound(new NBTTagCompound());
			playerIn.getActiveItemStack().getTagCompound().setInteger("TestVal", 1);
		int curVal = playerIn.getActiveItemStack().getTagCompound().getInteger("TestVal");
		playerIn.getActiveItemStack().getTagCompound().setInteger("TestVal", curVal+1);
        return super.onItemRightClick(worldIn, playerIn, handIn);
