I could use some help on instaling seperate game directories

So I discovered via the Rules and EAQ - Read before you post or get banned, that you can install separate game versions in different directories. I am like YAY! I don't have to remove mods, configs and options every time I wana switch modpacks and versions! But, I don't know where I am supposed to install forge to. Do I install forge into the default .minecraft or the new .minecraft(whatever version/modpack)?
