How to start coding mods on a mac?

I am wondering how to start coding mod on version 1.8.9. I recently started learning java and my teacher said we could pick a project to do. I want to do minecraft mods but i don't know where to start. I am on an old macbook air. If anyone could help that would be really amazing.

1.8.9 is no longer supported on this forum due to its age.

Please update to 1.14 and above if you would like to receive support on this forum.

1. Do not follow tutorials on YouTube, especially TechnoVision (previously called Loremaster) and HarryTalks, due to their promotion of bad practice and usage of outdated code.

2. Always post your code.

3. Never copy and paste code. You won't learn anything from doing that.
