Hi, yesterday I installed ubuntu 18.4 after accidentally nuking my windows install. When I boot forge (I used the universal installer) from the profile in the minecraft launcher it just crashes. I have set java 1.8.0_242 as my default version of java. I believe I may need to change minecrafts java path  but it wouldn't work with java 11 either. When I set forges java path to /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin instead of default when I try to launch launcher shows me this error:

Unable to create directory.
Error details: Not a directory
Filename on disk: java
Path: /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java
Exists: File

Please help I really want to get this working and not have to switch back to windows because ubuntu is so much better!

Please provide launcher_log.txt from your .minecraft folder

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.
