How to get SCP stuff on Minecraft 1.16.5 Mac

Hi. I just bought Minecraft Java for my son's birthday. All he really wants is to get the SCP stuff that he's seen on youtube working on it. He's been playing Minecraft PE on the iPad quite a bit during lockdown so he knows what he's doing. I know virtually nothing about Minecraft or coding or Java etc.

 

I have an iMac running latest Big Sur OS. I updated Java to what I believe is the latest, 8 (it says update 218) and Minecraft works fine. 

 

I tried downloading various SCP Jar and Zip files and putting them into the Resourcepacks folder, but they didn't show in the Available Packs lists in Minecraft. I did manage to get one file - "SCP+Restoration 0.4.0-1.16.4" into Minecraft's Selected Resource Packs list once I had unzipped it, but we couldn't find any new items in the inventory. 

 

So next I tried Forge after reading thats what you need to launch mods in Minecraft. Java won't open the latest 1.16.5 version of Forge, which I presume is supposed to work with Minecraft 1.16.5. When I click open, it says, "The Java file ... could not be launched. Check the Console for possible error messages." I looked in the console window, but its displaying about 1000 messages per minute so its impossible to find the error message for someone like me that doesn't know what they're looking for.

 

I could open Forge version 1.16.4. I selected the Install Client option and pressed OK, but I have no idea if it did anything. I made a mods folder in Application Support/Minecraft and put some Jar files in there, but when I open Minecraft there is no 'mods' button so I can't access anything from the folder in Minecraft. 

 

To be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't know which SCP files to download, I don't know if I need Forge to use them, I don't know how to open Jar files and I don't know what is compatible with what. If anyone can give some advice it would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi. I see. Many thanks for the tips. Maybe I would be better off downgrading Minecraft to an earlier version, if that is even possible?

 

A couple of follow up questions - will Forge 1.16.4 work in Minecraft 1.16.5 (latest) or do I need Forge 1.16.5? If the latter then I need to find a way to open and install the Jar file.

 

Also - if Forge 1.16.4 has been installed correctly why do I not have a Mods button in Minecraft?

Thanks. I'm starting to learn a few things now. So I get the installations bit and have made new test installations. I can open Minecraft 1.16.4 but when I try to play Forge 1.16.4 - 35.1.4 it crashes on start up with Exit Code:0. I know this is a fairly common crash code, so probably not much help. 

 

So I guess I should either try and work out why it crashes or try and work out why I can't install Forge 1.16.5.

I found this line in the Log report whenever I try to instal Forge. Not sure if this is what you wanted. Cheers

Can you tell me where I find it?

So, the  1.16.4-forge-35.1.4.jar  file is in the folder:  minecraft/versions/1.16.4-forge-35.1.4  and the only other file in that folder is a .json file of the same name. I can't find any other installer file apart from the one I downloaded which is my downloads folder and there's no log in there.

 

There is a minecraft/logs folder. Apart from that I just don't know where to look. Sorry

Thanks, but I'm afraid there's nothing there. I even downloaded it again just now into a new folder, opened it and ran the installer. There' no new log file been made in there. I don't get it. My mac never makes a log file in the folder that I've downloaded and launched the installer from. Sorry for not understanding. I've installed thousands of apps on my mac and have never once seen a log file.

Thanks. I tried it once and it asked me to install JDK. So I installed JDK and then it says unable to access jarfile

Ok, so we're definitely getting somewhere now. Forge is working. Mods button there. Tried the SCP Restoration and need Sakato 4.1, so have downloaded.

 

Where do I put the Satako file? Do I need to install it or just put it in a folder?
