I've looked through the minecraft code before, but I haven't been able to figure out how to add custom damage sources that give custom death messages. If anyone knows how to do this and is willing to help me, I'd appreciate it.

I've looked through the minecraft code before, but I haven't been able to figure out how to add custom damage sources that give custom death messages.

Pretty simple:

DamageSource myDamageSource = new DamageSource("myMod.myDamageSource");

Then to add the death messages add a String localization for

death.attack.myMod.myDamageSource for just dying and

death.attack.myMod.myDamageSource.player for dying from another player or entity. Have a look at the Minecraft .lang files for examples.

Lets try what we do with block extant it.

Thanks you two. That really helped. I'm really appreciative of you helping me with the damage source aspect. Now for the potion aspect of my question. How do you actually tell the game what each potion does.
