How to load different textures for one item / block?

For example if i have those two pictures:

 

width=128 height=128https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/184200482/img/multi_img_1.png[/img]

 

width=128 height=128https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/184200482/img/multi_img_2.png[/img]

 

And i want to create the following:

 

width=128 height=128https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/184200482/img/multi_img_3.png[/img]

 

Which method do i have to use?

Use multiple render passes and load a different icon texture in each.

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

While I'm using dozens of textures and figuring out which one to draw based on NBT data, the relevant info is there.
