Tried double-clicking the installer from the desktop and again through the command line, keep getting this message "You need to run the version 1.6.4 manually at least once". I don't know what to do - I'm too new to this, sorry

    OK, I get it now (*duh*). Hadn't clued in that it was the old  Minecraft version 1.6.4 that had to be run first
