I'm not sure how to fix this problem. When running the forge version of the server and then trying to log in to it using client machine, the client just sits on a loading screen. The server side just repeatedly puts "[18:57:09] [Netty IO #2/INFO]: Unexpected packet during modded negotiation - assuming vanilla or keepalives : net.minecraft.network.play.client.C00PacketKeepAlive" in the log. Any idea how to fix this. I'm using latest version of forge.

Vanilla or Forge client?

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

Vanilla right now. I thought it may have been because I was using a modded version originally (with the too many items non forge mod) so I switched to just vanilla version. Do I have to use forge client?

Yes, adding support for vanilla clients to connect to modded servers is in the works: But not done yet

ah ok, thanks for the answer. After you asked me if I was using a forge client or the vanilla client, I had a feeling that was going to be the answer. Thanks for confirming.  :)
