_gjkf_
Hello everyone, I know this is a question that has been asked lots of times, but I couldn't find anything that could help me. I know how to make a Git repository and syncing that with eclipse. If I try that with my mod, instead of copying the files and then pushing them to git, eclipse moves them to the local repo folder, so that I can't access them anymore and I don't see anything in my git repository. I'm on Mac, version 10.7.5 (can't update, my Mac is too old) I would really love to be able to access my mod on git. Thanks. P.S.: I have never used Github before, so I don't really know much about it. Quote "I an atom in the universe, a universe of atoms"-- Richard P. jabelar
I strongly recommend using SourceTree. It is a free client that helps manage git on either Windows or Mac. You should choose to use the "embedded" version of git (meaning it will set up git for you). A lot of people, and I expect someone here will answer the same, will say "git isn't so hard, just do it from command line" but honestly it can be a bit tricky figuring it out. Why not use a graphical client that handles it for you? Anyway, I use it on Windows and like it a lot and recommend it to anyone who is a casual coder. I haven't tried it on Mac, but it seems to be available. Quote Check out my tutorials here: http://jabelarminecraft.blogspot.com/
Kwibble
I use source tree on a mac, and its great I use in conjunction with bit u bitbucket though l, so I am not sure of there are any different quirks with github. I highly doubt its different. Aside from that, its great! @jabelar I personally use command line on my wondow Quote We all stuff up sometimes... But I seem to be at the bottom of that pot. TheGreyGhost
Hi Using GitHub is really easy, the site has some excellent tutorials and set-by-step instructions. The harder part is getting your git to synchronise the local repository with the remote (i.e. GitHub), it took me a while to figure it out. I did it using IntelliJ instead of Eclipse, so if Jabelar recommends SourceTree, I'd so go for that. -TGG
Meastroman
To be honest, once you used Github for a month, it's extremely easy. However like a some here said, it can be tricky. I do not know if you are just making an example/test mod right now or if you already started and want to share your code with a friend. However I recommend you creating a testmod or at least a test git repo for the first time. (Just in case you weren't planning on doing this). Now I found that this might be interresting for you: try.github.com/. I know this is a tutorial for using the commandline, but the idea is the same, and I think it would be nice for you to know the basics. I myself have used both commandline git and their git app for mac (not source tree like the guys above, but I have heard some good feedback about it, as other apps around that share the same purpose). I like the git app for mac (and I guess it looks some what the same on Windows/Linux), though it can be confusing since some buttons do not share their name with the commandline counterparts. (For example syncing, because its multiple commands in one button) I think that's all I have to say about it. EDIT: Typo
_gjkf_
Thanks to everybody for your answers @jabelar @Kwibble I'll try using Source tree, I hope it will help me out @Meastroman I'll build a basic mod, just to try it out on git, I'll tell you if I have any problems. Thanks again. Quote "I an atom in the universe, a universe of atoms"-- Richard P. Feynman
_gjkf_
hey guys, I downloaded source tree, how can I use it? I have no idea Sorry if it sounds stupid, I just have no clue about git and anything related to it, exception made for EGit (Eclipse plugin, I can't use it, it won't work...) Thanks in advance Quote "I an atom in the universe, a universe of atoms"-- Richard P. Feynman

I have no problems using eclipse only. You can setup multiple local repositories pretty easily (google "eclipse git local repository"). So you just set that repo to the same location as the forgeinstallation (the .git folder should be besides the src folder) and BAM there you go. Eclipse won't move any files whatsoever

jabelar
I'm away from my computer at the moment but will try to give some instructions in a couple hours. But for now you should install it with the option for embedded git otherwise you'll have to do a separate git install. You should sign up for a github account if you don't have one already. jabelar
Sorry for the delay, but I realized that there was a lot to write and so went ahead and wrote it up as a tutorial. Please check out the tutorial, and let me know if you have any trouble (I just wrote it, so probably could be improved): http://jabelarminecraft.blogspot.com/p/minecraft-forge-publishing-to-github.html Quote Check out my tutorials here: http://jabelarminecraft.blogspot.com/

jabelar
You mean SourceTree app crashes? At what point exactly? What kind of computer are you using (what OS and is it good performance)? WorldsEnder
LexManos points out in his tutorial for forge that you should include gradlew, gradlew.bat and gradle/ in your github repo so that anyone can build your project just by checking out your master branch. _gjkf_
You mean SourceTree app crashes? At what point exactly? What kind of computer are you using (what OS and is it good performance)? SourceTree App crashes, no crash report. It crashes when I press the "Create Repository" Button on the "Show Hosted Repositories" view. I have a Mac Book Pro 13'', 5 years old. I'm using 10.7.5 as OS Specs: Processor: 2,53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Ram: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b) Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB I hope this helps Quote "I an atom in the universe, a universe of atoms"-- Richard P. jabelar
That would have to be a problem either with the application or with your computer (although frankly creating the remote repository shouldn't tax most computers). I would search web for similar crashes. Maybe some other Mac users here have some suggestions. Sorry, but the app crashing isn't something I can really help with. The one thing I know is that in the release notes in previous fixes there were similar such issues. Possible work-around: I think you might want to try doing it the other way around. In my tutorial I have the hosted repository get created from SourceTree, but you can actually create it directly on github website first. So just go to the github web site and create a new repository (use name of your project folder). Then skip the step in my tutorial about creating the hosted repository and just add the repository as a remote (later step) to your local repository. jabelar
It worked!!! I love you man!!! Great! Getting a version control system working is worth the effort. Once you're comfortable with it you'll wonder how you lived without it.
