Modifying name displayed above a player's head

Hello,

 

Does anyone know the best of way of modifying the name displayed above another player's head?

 

In the past I have done this using a transformer to patch the renderLivingLabel method, but I want to avoid this completely if possible.

 

Any ideas? :)
