Where to store player specific data accessible by items

Hello, I will preface with the fact that I am a noobie minecraft modder but know a decent amount of programming.

 

I am working on a mod that has an item similar to Equivalent Exchange items in that it will have different modes (ie. transmute/extension/pillar etc). I have key bindings in place and have tested different item effects, but haven't figured out how to connect the two. In the same vein as EE I would like to toggle modes with the specified key and then have the item's onItemRightClick() method read/access the mode to determine the outcome.

 

Is there something I'm obviously missing, overlooking, or approaching the wrong way?
