Crafting semi-shapleless recipes?

is there a way to craft a recipe like the sticks. without having to code each and every possible location for the materials? i tried this code:

obRod = new obRod().setUnlocalizedName("obRod").setCreativeTab(MCreativeTabs.tabmaterials).setTextureName(RefStrings.MODID + ":obRod");

for a "obsidian rod" recipe. but i want it so that it can only made if the 2 obsidian are placed vertically. (right now. it can be made regardless of the location of the obsidian)

This is not a crafting recipe.

How about something like:

GameRegistry.addRecipe(new ItemStack(MItems.obRod, 4),
    "O",
    "O",
    'O', Blocks.obsidian);

That seemed to work exactly the same as sticks for me.

Who are you? Why have you brought me here? And why are there so many PewDiePie fanboys surrounding meeeeeeeee....... *falls into pit and dies*.

Also this. Check it out.

Huh. it works! thanks! :D

It works because when you specify a grid arrangement smaller than 3x3 it lets it occur in any location on the grid.  Enforcing a 3x3 shape by using spaces forces the recipe into the only place it fits: right where the spaces tell it it should go.
