Forge VS FML

So what exactly is the technical difference between Minecraft Forge and Forge Mod Loader?

DRAGONMANG: "I'm Dragonmang, m8. Here me roar."

HERO: "Oh no... not. Dragonmang."

DRAGONMANG: "Roar, m8."

HERO: "Ahhh......"

And so the brave knight and Dragonmang fought on the mountaintop for many moons....

Originally forge was based on Risugami's ModLoader. When Minecraft 1.3 came out and Client & Server were merged (before SinglePlayer was an entirely different codebase than when playing on a server, now it's the same thing) Risugami's ModLoader was more or less dead, since it only ever properly supported SinglePlayer and Multiplayer support was sort of tacked on half-assedly using ModLoaderMP, which was a real piece of art (sarcasm alert!).

This lead to cpw writing FML as a replacement for ModLoader. It originally even had compatibility built in for loading ModLoader mods. Nowadays the border between what is in FML and forge is not very clear anymore, especially now that the projects have been merged into one.

The historical details might not be accurate, as it was a long time ago :P
