Hi, I wanted try to upgrade an old mod from another author named "Stefinus". He made a gun mod that is for 1.7.10 and if I could make some changes and make it compatible to 1.9 or even 1.10 which is coming up, how would I do that?

Does he provide source code?

Does he's license agree with redistribution/modification or do you have explicit approval?

If both are true - you can simply grab his src and upgrade.

If only 2nd is true - you will need to download his mod and decompile it. To do that you could probably use BON (Bearded Octo Nemesis) based on forge version given mod is written in (which you also need to know).

If 2nd is false - touching his work is "stealing".

1.7.10 is no longer supported by forge, you are on your own.

No, He doesn't. And all I can tell you is that he uses Forge 1.7.10 and I have never heard of BON. He also says nothing about editing his mod, he abandoned all of his followers 10 months ago, leaving his "In progress" mod to remain unfinished so I really don't care.
