Why?

Minecraft.getMinecraft().mcDataDir

for entirely clientside.

FMLCommonHandler.instance().getMinecraftServerInstance().getDataDirectory()

for when serverside (including singleplayer integrated server).

so i can use

Minecraft.getMinecraft().mcDataDir

and the normal java

File

object to check something like file.exists? im not on my pc now...

from what i understand from mcDataDir is just returning the folder's File object (reading online)
