Greetings,

I have to admit, I resisted Minecraft for years and I finally relented, now I'm hooked like a 2 dollar crack whore.

I have a couple of general questions, I did several searches and nothing pertaining to what I wanted to ask came (maybe I walked right past it?) I hope this is the right thread for theses, don't want to piss anyone off.

I understand Forge is really like the "Universal Translator" for Minecraft Mods.

After three worlds with Vanilla, the latest version 1.10.2, I just started Mod'ing this past week, and I chose to run Forge (and my Mods of course) on 1.9.4

Downloaded the mods I liked, created a world, and started adding them one at a time after play testing them a little to make sure everything was good. Added "Finder-Compass", then "Just Enough Items", and then "Backpacks by Brad16840", no problems.

Then I created a new world for MCA (Minecraft Comes Alive), added MCA, but 5 minutes after I used the Crystal ball, the world crashed, tried to log back in and wouldn't let me, CRASH. I just removed MCA (I will be submitting the crash report to both MCA and Brad16840), logged back into the world I created for MCA - said "blocks were missing" and "it will create a back up of the world" and then logged in, and had no problems, no crash, and went back to my Forge 1.9.4. worlds.

I think it said something about ?Core Mods? and I think it was Backpacks that actually crashed/conflicted with MCA.

OK, my questions are...

To play my old Vanilla 1.10.2 games, do I need a separate Vanilla install, or will just switching to the original profile handle that? If I switch back to the original profile - not the "Forge" profile - will it switch me back to vanilla, i.e. Mod-less and then I can play my Vanilla 1.10.2 Worlds without messing them up?

I've read on some of the threads that Mod'ing players use an earlier and version of Minecraft/Forge, 1.7 if I recall correctly?

Is this something that I should do to make sure the mods work together?

and then about upgrading...once I have all the mods I like working well together, I don't really want to upgrade to most recent updates, do I?

and as an after thought, does anyone know if the Industrialcraft 2 Mod will work with MCA?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Apologies if this is not the right place for these questions.

The crash report is below...

Thanks again.

Yeah, Forge is API (modding tool/interface) that gives us (modders) hooks we can use to stay compatible with each other (as opposed to JAR modding which was basically replacing vanilla and making everything incompatible - not supported).

1. Most mods (majority) from 1.9.4 also work on 1.10+

* I just want to say this is VERY unusual, normally each major version need version-specific mods, but nothing much changed between those 2, so we have this outcome.

2. Said that - you should always try to keep it updated! Unless you REALLY want to use some outdated mods, ye go ahead, but if it's possible - go forward - this is rather response for modders, not for users, but hell.

3. Mods work when they are there - if you load existing world with new mods - they will start to work from this point forward.

If you remove them at some point - loading world (which previously had entries of some mod - such as blocks/items) will automatically make you a backup of old world (with removed mod's data) and will open copy of it. From this point - any data that cannot be "read" by mod (because mod was removed) will become obsolete and thus removed. What I am saying here - if you e.g generate some blocks by exploring parts of world and then remove mod that owns those - re-exploring (loading chunk which have those blocks) will effectively remove them. Same goes for any other logic that was left over.

4. If mod is a "Core" mod it basically means it either has retarded author who instead of using hooks provided by forge makes his own direct vanilla code modifications or sometimes it means that mod in question is actually so unique it simply has to make such modifications (which are usually very specific). Such core mods can become incompatible with other stuff that somehow requires certain things to work as they were.

5. Said that - if you get crashes such as you just got (index out of bounds) it either means Backpack mod simply has retarded mistake or is a core mod like you proposed (I don't know that, maybe some other is...) and maybe is crashing with others.

6. Each profile is a different game - so yeah, you can have multiple profiles with multiple vanilla and forge versions.

* Launching a vanilla game or modded game has almost nothing to do with "what you play". It is world saves that are important here.

Like said before - if world was created using some mods, you need those mods (run proper version and mods) for this world to work correctly.

If world was vanilla - suddenly opening it with modded game will start modded "events".

7. Using 1.7 or even 1.8 is BAD and modding for it (like starting new project) is RETARDED and... read my caption.

As user you can play with mods on whatever version you like, but for devs it is always - "Go for latest" - sadly not everyone does it (mostly because 1.7->1.8 was a big change and people find "popularity" in old version so they start writing for old version and as you can see - we get infinite wheel of retards who develop for something that is not supposed to be used anymore).

8. No - you should be using version you NEED to run mods you want, while at least trying to play with possibly latest ones. New - better (always).

9. You want to always update to latest possible, but again - if you can't (because there is no mod) you need to consider your options (drop old mod and get new ones or wait for update which might not come).

10. Idk if IC even update to 1.8+, so if not - you will need to downgrade everything to even use it. If there is no MCA for 1.7.10 then oviously no.

  Quote

1.7.10 is no longer supported by forge, you are on your own.

Thanks a much...you couldn't have said things plainer for me!

I know what I need to do, avoid the Mods that use Core Mod (Backpack is gone).

Much appreciated!

P.s. just started studying how to write Mods...and your Mod'er advice opened my Minecraft third eye! ;-)

I've got an updating question. What is the most conventional way to update Forge? The way I do it now is like this:

gradlew cleancache
gradlew setupDecompWorkspace
gradlew eclipse

I still haven't published a mod because I can never get that in-dev version just right to warrant a public release. And yes, after two years of mod development I am still learning to speak Java.

Don't run

cleanCache

, that deletes the entire Gradle cache; just run

setupDecompWorkspace

and then refresh your IDE project. For IDEA this can be done from the Gradle window, for Eclipse you may or may not need to re-run

eclipse

.

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.

Does this mean that gradlew eclipse is a redundant command in the updating process as well?

I still haven't published a mod because I can never get that in-dev version just right to warrant a public release. And yes, after two years of mod development I am still learning to speak Java.

I don't use Eclipse, I don't know exactly how you refresh your project after updating. Does it work without running the

eclipse

task?

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.

I don't know, I've never tried. So far I've always played it safe and did EXACTLY as the Forge documentation says, and it says this:

For Eclipse, you should run gradlew eclipse - this will download some more artifacts for building eclipse projects and then place the eclipse project artifacts in your current directory.

alternately just run gradlew setupDecompWorkspace eclipse as gradle will pick up both tasks and run them one after the other

That's really cool, which means I can create a bat file to act as a one button updater.

For Eclipse, running

gradlew setupDecompWorkspace

and

gradlew eclipse

is enough to update Forge.

Alright, that's what I wanted to know, thanks.
