Great news. The contest was a hit and we've turned out some amazing new designs and logos. From everyone on the Forge team I want to say thanks for participating and giving us some awesome things to work with.

 

With that said though you all aren't reading this to see me say thanks so lets get down to the important stuff, like you know, who the hell won.

Introduction

Forge is in need of a new logo and due to the lack of a graphics designer in the core team, it was decided that the community should get the opportunity to design the new front for Forge.

 

The competition will run from today 09/08/16 to just before Minecon 09/20/16.

The extra 3 days is so I can order business card for the con

 

Results will be put up for a community vote with the final winner then being decided by me, LexManos. The winner will receive a $100 prize for their creation {Paid via paypal}, but will also transfer all rights to it over to me, ensuring no legal issues will arise in the future. Of course the artist will still be attributed as the original creator.

 

Requirements

Submissions must meet the following requirements:

[*]All assets must be free to use commercially. If third party assets are used in a creation, please refer to your source, enabling us to double check licenses.

[*]The logo should consist of both an icon and a wordmark, which have to be usable separated from one another. The text for the wordmark simply has to be "Forge" (without "Minecraft"). Requirement (1) also applies to the used typeface.

[*]If the logo uses colors, care should be taken that it also looks good in greyscale. If it does not (due to low contrast, for example), an alternative greyscale version has to be provided.

[*]Submissions should be in a vector format (preferably SVG). If you do not have access to vector art software, make sure that your rasterized creation is easily convertible to a vector format, i.e. try to limit it to simple, solid color shapes. If you use a raster format, including the name of the used typeface for the wordmark in your submission is essential!

[*]In addition to the logo itself, designs for business cards and an animation for the in-game loading screen are required. The animation should be using a vector format, too, if possible (e.g. using Synfig Studio), otherwise submit it as GIF with a transparent/white background or submit individual frames in a high-quality format. If you cannot animate the logo yourself, include a reasonably detailed description of what you would have wanted to achieve, maybe it can be added later on.

 

Use Cases

The winner's logo will be used in the following contexts and should be designed accordingly:

• Icon & Wordmark
  
  • Forum/website header
    
  • In-Game mod information page

Additional Information

As stated above, the winner will transfer all rights to his creation to me, LexManos, in return for $100 prize money. Although you will still be credited appropriately, this is necessary to prevent legal issues with the usage of this logo. Additionally, you should be ready to take further (paid) design requests surrounding the Forge brand, e.g. webdesign for a new forum. If you are not versed in a given task, you should still be able to give council on how to keep new things in line with your design.

 

Business cards should have spots for Name, Email, and Website.

Sending in your submission

To send in your submission, simply post a download link to all your files in a ZIP in response to this topic. The ZIP should contain a readme.txt file (no other format) which describes your general idea, lists your sources and optionally contains a description of the animation. Name all files appropriately to make them easily distinguishable from each other. You do not have to provide icon and wordmark as separate files unless they overlap each other in some way in the combined form.

I don't really have time for a full submission, but made a concept anyway. If anyone wants to use it as a base, feel free to do so. The font I used can be found here https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Cutive+Mono

 

The idea is that a block is "casted" (animation could be the casting of blocks on a conveyor belt).

I've added slight depth to the logos. I've also fixed the white space on the B/W version. Business cards are now all there along with a blank one for your own use. The second animation and Synfig file are in there too.

- I added more information about the anvil and the hammer in the readme.txt (I had forgotten this - sorry!)

- The business cards have now a backside and I changed the text. (There is also a print and a preview version now the zip.)

- I added another PDF with some color information in it.

- I added 2 .svg files - RGB and CMYK - ready to use.

Whelp as we're getting close to the end I figured i'd step in and give my thoughts on what we currently have:

 

iLexiconn: I like its simplicity, a bit too on the nose with Minecraft. I'd like to stay away from cubes in general.

 

jajo_11: Interesting concept, again I like the simplicity. However the cube is a bit Minecrafty. And the single pixel border is rather hard to see at the sizes we'd most likely use this. Also, what font is that? Is it a permissive license?

 

Bottersnike: I think that the SVGs may be a little messed up as it doesn't render the full 'E' for me. However, I do like the hammers. Again fairly simple/clean and moving away from the dead-on Minecraft vibe. As for the animation I think it's nice, but it may be better if it was just one of the hammers going horizontal to vertical, as if striking. Only question I have is did you get the images for the hammers somewhere or are they 100% home grown?

 

silenz: Interesting concept, however my main concern is that its just the word Forge. And the 'logo' looks like an 'A' with a 'T' inside it and is a bit to confusing as nothing in Forge has a 'A' or a 'T'.

 

effective: I like it, it's simple, clean, the license for the font is permissive. My only concern so far is the icon itself. It seems to be a derivative of this, which isn't bad as it's a free/open icon as long as attribution is provided. Is the hammer taken from anywhere and can we verify its license? As for the card, get rid of the 'God' part, makes me sound arrogant, its on the forums as a joke. I usually just put "Lead Developer"

 

PitchBright: And finally to you, yours is definitely the most well presented So let's start off, the logo again as with the others I like the simplicity. Small anvil with the name simple, clean, can be put anywhere and just works. The anvil is clean enough that it can be used as a standalone icon and still be visible even at smaller sizes. However the artwork license is both a bit confusing and rather expensive. Not to mention that as we talked about before, it has too much of that 'Football' feel to it. Found an alternative here that has a much more permissive license and doesn't have the football feel. As for the business card, i would say use the 'corporate' as the back. And the logo on the front. Makes it cleaner/less busy. The fonts are however a question as I'm having difficulty understanding their license. If I understand it correctly we can buy the desktop license and we can then use it to create the images. Which are then freely distribuitable with no limitations?

 

Anways, this is my first pass at this all. I will say I'm heavily leaning towards effective and PitchBright right now as they are doing a good job moving away from the "THIS IS OBVIOUSLY MINECRAFT".

I can confirm that the hammers are 100% home grown although vaguely based off http://gwellwood.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/hammer.jpg (I'm sure you'll see what I mean by vauge ) I'll give the animation idea a try and update the business card(s) with the information you edited in.

I really don't want to look like a complete c*nt but like these are in my opinion extremely close to simmilar blacksmith labels and vectors.. I don't know i think if it is more unique and diffirent than the Forge's current logo : http://prntscr.com/cjxfo5 but at the same time i guess that is kind of the brand's thing but.. i don't know i like unique and new stuff. An idea just poped off in my head but it is too late i guess
