So I've just created a custom block, and for some reason, I'm running into a NullPointerException when trying to register it.

Here's the full code:

private static void registerBlockModels(){
        ModelLoader.setCustomModelResourceLocation(Item.getItemFromBlock(BlockHandler.blockWeaponRack), 0,
                new ModelResourceLocation(BlockHandler.blockWeaponRack.getRegistryName(), "normal"));
    }

And for some reason, this part is returning null:

Item.getItemFromBlock(BlockHandler.blockWeaponRack)

I've already tested the block itself, and it isn't null. Just the return value of that ^. I'm not sure why that would be null if the block itself isn't. Any help is appreciated!

Have you registered an

ItemBlock

for your

Block

? It's not done automatically.

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.

Hmmm, perhaps not. I don't remember seeing that in the YouTube tutorial I'm watching. haha. My class extends 'Block' and I am doing

GameRegistry.register(blockWeaponRack);

Is that what you mean?

And following up on this, do you have any resources you'd recommend that have stood out to you for beginners?

MC version 1.10 removed the auto-magic creation of item for block. You must now instantiate and register your own ItemBlock. If your tutorial doesn't warn you of this, then it is obsolete.

The debugger is a powerful and necessary tool in any IDE, so learn how to use it. You'll be able to tell us more and get better help here if you investigate your runtime problems in the debugger before posting.

Ah okay. Could you provide an example of this or point me in the right direction? Is it something as simple as like:

this.setItemBlock(new ItemBlock())

in my custom block's constructor?

Update. I actually managed to find another tutorial that's updated for 1.10 :D I found the ItemBlock part and everything is working now. Thanks for the insight, both of ya!

    • The crash points to moonlight lib - try other builds or make a test without this mod and the mods requiring it
    • Do you have shaders enabled? There is an issue with the mod simpleclouds - remove this mod or disable shaders, if enabled
    • Maybe you need to create file in assets/<modid>/items/<itemname>.json with content like this:   { "model": { "type": "minecraft:model", "model": "modname:item/itemname" } }
