Can't get Forge running for some weeks - please help

I am doing IT support for my children, who have recently discovered Minecraft world :). Now they want to use mods. I have googled a bit and now I am using Magic Launcher 1.3.4. Have discovered, that using Forge.jar as the first listed mod (which did not work anyways) is now obsoleted and running installer recommended. I am able to install latest recommended forge.jar (1.11.2-13.20.0.2252) and set it in the Magic Launcher's environment selector. Launching game with this setup runs for couple of seconds, showing several progress bars increasing (but not to full 100%), then crashes. I did (re)install latest java (1.8.0_121-b13) and let installer to remove all recent versions found. I have re-downloaded vecmath-1.5.2.jar and made sure it is in the same folder structure both on local and network installation (I use home NAS for routine game installations - now tested local instalation as well, just in case, but it behaves exactly the same). Still no joy.

No idea what Magic Launcher is, but after looking into it a little it looks like it's just a minecraft launcher that is suppose to make it easier to get mods, right? Are you trying to run a server? Just let them play SinglePlayer? Or do a SinglePlayer world and then openToLan so they can play with eachother?

If your trying to run a server then that is setup separately and I could link you some steps or something if you want.

For playing without a dedicated server, so for SinglePlayer/ Singleplayer + openToLan, then what I recommend is using the twitch app to install mods. With the twitch app it is really easy to create a custom profile and add mods individually,  or you can download preexisting modpacks that others built as well.

I have "private" server running on local NAS (Linux based) already, even managed to setup MultiVerse-Core, did not try to mod it yet. Children either play SinglePlayer/shared over LAN or use this server. However what I need is really ability to create various profiles for various sets of client-side mods.

Do I understand well, that Magic Launcher (one of first modding related hits on Google) is not that general and overall used over community, as soon Google hit + description on homepage suggested and I should replace it with Twitch app for desktop,  which should be able to start my minecraft.jar together with pre-loading mods according to some (per session selectable ???) profile ?

Regarding server-side mods I got impression, that there is no option how to replace client-side modding (e.g. special blocks like Lighting) or functionality (e.g. Red Stone WiFi) by some server-side mod/configuration. Am i wrong? I would appreciate any recommendations/links regarding this, if it is possible!

The twitch app has its own way of handling profiles, allowing you to have multiple profiles with whatever different mods you want even with different versions of Minecraft if you want. Then most mods can be added inside the twitch app as well without you having to move files around or anything like that.

Twitch has a problem as it needs another account(s)+password(s) then minecraft one(s) to be used. Moreover it can not find my Minecraft installations behind .minecraft, as it can handle only alphanumeric folders (!!!). Any other tips for reliable mod loaders, please?

Do you mean like a twitch account, they are free to make and you will stay logged in. Then when you launch the game it uses Mojangs launcher so you just use your minecraft account to login there. Also I'm pretty sure twitch uses its own minecraft install. At least I know mine does

Here is an article for playing minecraft with twitch:

This is exactly where the problem is. I have 3 children which randomly share 3 PCs in LAN over the house. So it will be one big mess, if there will be need to enter account name (I could not create account under our generally used nick as it was taken by someone already - so new and new account/nick mismatches) and there will not be simple select account rolldown menu where password gets filled in automatically (which is present in the magic launcher), if they change the location/PC.

By the way I do not understand, why/how the launcher blocks the way when the error comes from the fact, that the vecmath jar is not loaded inside the running forge jar. It leads to question: who is responsible for loading vecmath: launcher or the forge jar? If possible I would love to stay with present configuration as it is very satisfactory for us in all other aspects and we get used to it already. Any clues?

if you want even more freedom use MultiMC.

MultiMC looks pretty good. Will give it the try and post here my experience. It may take some time however...

Thank you for pointing me towards MultiMC. (Why there can not be such a "community de-facto standard" pointer on the official game site (like Steam games almost always have)? I hate these "social DRMs", which waste efforts of many people just to make one overwealthy.)

There is no official pointer to MultiMC since most of it's functionality (i.e. running multiple versions side by side without interference) is now supported by the official launcher.

This statement lead me to the idea to give the official launcher another look. Everything went nice while I launched launcher.jar directly, except, that it (even with %APPDATA% workaround forun through Google) continued to search for versions on my local disk(s), while I need it to search on the network disk (Z:\Share\Games...). This is needed as  I am not willing to copy version after new forge version download on each workstation local disk again and again.

Further googling directed me towards using MinecraftLauncher.exe instead of launcher.jar. However I am completely unable to force it to see Z:\....\version\* versions of forge jars, even if they are present there.  I am trying

start MinecraftLauncher.exe --lockDir "%CD%" --workDir "%CD%"

either with or without --lockDir it seems to behave same and revert to C:\...\AppData\...\version

As well the configuration flexibility seems to be worse than in previous launcher.jar solution.

As from your posts over forums I got impression you are officially related to Mojang, please, can you post step-by-step description how to do install on LAN Network disk Z:\<some_path>\Minecraft so, that no other paths, esspecially no local disk information, are needed to run multiple profiles (vanilla, modded, modded other way) so that it can be installed/updated once, used by multiple workstations? Thank you in advance.

pmendl -- I am facing a similar situation to you (at least it sounds like you are trying the same things I have been) so I'll be very interested to see if you can get this working.  I'll share a couple things I've  come across in case it helps.  Launcher 2.x seems to be dead set on looking in the c:\%appdata%\roaming\.minecraft folder for a file called launcher_profiles.json file.  (I am in a Windows environment but I think Linux is similar).

Using the --workingDir option only redirects some of the files, not all of them.

I was able to fake it out by relocating my c drive .minecraft folder to my d drive and I created a symlink.

In a command prompt I went to %appdata% and typed this (again windows cmd):

mklink /D .minecraft D:\Minecraft\.minecraft

That seems to force all the files to go into the alternate location.  I can even get latest version of Minecraft and Forge to run.  Problem comes when you try to load another version of Minecraft and Forge and point them to a different game directory.  The launcher allows you to kick off another version and set the game directory.  But when you go to install the matching version of Forge, it doesn't see the launcher_profiles.json file (even if you copy one in there) and throws the error:  There is no minecraft launcher profile at this location, you need to run the launcher first!

With the old launcher is was very easy to have self contained "versions" that you could move around wherever you wanted but this launcher seems to tie you to 1 file the launcher_profiles.json.   I have seen a lot of people refer to MultiMC for getting that flexibility so maybe something to check out (I haven't tried it).
