I haven't played in 2 years so please forgive my noob status.  I installed Forge & launched the game (1.12).  It comes up with "Game Crash.  An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed.  We're sorry for the inconvenience."  Forge installed just fine.  I tried the recommended & the most recent versions for 1.12.  Both result in the same crash.

Here's the log file: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/d1f141505576dd368a35b991a77c5787

I haven't installed anything other than Forge at this point. I have played a vanilla 1.12 world for several hours.

The log explains exactly what the problem is and how to avoid it:

[20:32:09] [main/FATAL] [FML/]: You should place original jars only in the mods directory. NEVER extract them to the mods directory.
[20:32:09] [main/FATAL] [FML/]: The directories below appear to be extracted jar files. Fix this before you continue.
[20:32:09] [main/FATAL] [FML/]: Directory beheaded-1.7.10-0.3.1-UNIVERSAL contains [MANIFEST.MF]

Aside from that, 1.7.10 mods won't work on 1.12 (except under very rare circumstances where the mod doesn't use anything that's changed between Minecraft versions).

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.
