Posted September 12, 20178 yr Hello! I'm trying to create a recipe where my custom item will stay in the crafting grid and it keeps on being used up either way. Here is my class for the item: Spoiler package discardedmarrow.veganism.init.items; import java.util.List; import javax.annotation.Nullable; import net.minecraft.client.util.ITooltipFlag; import net.minecraft.item.Item; import net.minecraft.item.ItemStack; import net.minecraft.util.text.TextFormatting; import net.minecraft.world.World; import net.minecraftforge.fml.relauncher.Side; import net.minecraftforge.fml.relauncher.SideOnly; public class ItemPHVeganism extends Item { public ItemPHVeganism(String name, Item containerItem, int maxStackSize) { setUnlocalizedName(name); setRegistryName(name); setContainerItem(containerItem); setMaxStackSize(maxStackSize); } @SideOnly(Side.CLIENT) public void addInformation(ItemStack stack, @Nullable World worldIn, List<String> tooltip, ITooltipFlag flagIn) { super.addInformation(stack, worldIn, tooltip, flagIn); tooltip.add(TextFormatting.GOLD + "THIS ITEM IS A PLACEHOLDER\nAND WILL BE REPLACED"); } } Here is the recipe: Spoiler { "type": "minecraft:crafting_shaped", "pattern": [ " P ", "SSS", " B " ], "key": { "P": { "item": "veganism:press_item" }, "S": { "item": "veganism:soy_bean" }, "B": { "item": "minecraft:bucket" } }, "result": { "item": "veganism:bucket_soy_milk" } } where press_item is the item that's supposed to stay of type itemphveganism.

Here is my class for the item: Override hasContainerItem() and getContainerItem(). September 12, 20178 yr Author Okay I did that but I'm assuming you mean I should do something else in those methods than running the super. Just return true in has..() and the item to be returned in get..() ?
September 12, 20178 yr Just returning super means you did dick with the function and shouldn't bother with the override at all. So yes, return true and the itemstack you want to stay in the crafting grid. September 12, 20178 yr Author It does work, if I hardcode it. Works: Spoiler @Override public ItemStack getContainerItem(ItemStack itemStack) { return new ItemStack(ItemInit.press_item); } Doesn't work: Spoiler @Override public ItemStack getContainerItem(ItemStack itemStack) { return new ItemStack(this.containerItem); } But I need it to be mildly flexible, as in the containerItems being different.
September 12, 20178 yr Author nvm, seems like my containerItem is passed as null. Thanks for the help!
October 12, 20178 yr If anyone wonders what containerItem is, it's used to keep items after a craft. For example, after crafting cake, the milk buckets turn into buckets. Forge uses the container item to get the item that an ingredient transforms into. Thus, buckets are milk buckets' container item. (If there isn't a container item, then Itemstack.empty is returned) Edited October 12, 20178 yr by phlaxyr
