Hi, I'm not extremely familiar with the new registry system that has been introduced in 1.12. I'm attempting to figure out how I can get an instance of an Item from its registry name (i.e. "minecraft:torch")

 

It looks like in 1.7.10, you could call GameData.findItem(modid, name) however, I haven't been able to find anything from newer versions. I would think it's a part of the registry system, but I'm not sure how it would be done.

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

Is there a similar registry for entities? doesn't look like Entity class has an Entity.REGISTRY

ForgeRegistries.ENTITIES

 

I found that by looking at GameRegistry.registerModEntity and seeing what it called.

Thank you. Sorry, I haven't worked with entities so I didn't have any experience with methods involving them or I would have just looked there.

You can also use the @ObjectHolder injection system if you need to get a reference to an arbitrary block or item (or indeed anything that lives in a registry).  Example:

class MyClass {
  // If the block actually exists, Forge will inject its value into SOME_BLOCK
  // when block registration is done
  @ObjectHolder("somemod:someblock")
  public static final Block SOME_BLOCK = null;
  
  // later on, during the game...
  public void myMethod() {
    if (SOME_BLOCK != null) {
      // then it was registered and you can use it
      doStuffWith(SOME_BLOCK);
    }
  }
}
