I played with modding Minecraft awhile back.  Now I'm making another go at it again and downloaded Forge 1.12.2-14.23.1.2555 and installed with the Windows installer (also tried the java installer).  The install appears to be successful.  However, when I launch Minecraft, the launcher shows version 1.12-forge1.12-14.21.0.2373.  Before I noticed the version error I launched forge and it crashed during the first run.  Now it crashes with the generic "Game Crash An unexpected issue occurred..." every time.

Do I need to uninstall/delete the previous version and how do I do that?

You don't need to uninstall old versions, but any existing profiles using an existing/older version will remain as they are, using whatever version they were setup to use.

You either need to create a new profile using the new forge version (that's what I would do), or update old profiles to use the new version (which will quite possibly not work if the existing mods are not compatible with the new version).

Okay, please forgive my ignorance, I don't understand how profiles work.  I'm not concerned about keeping existing/older versions of anything.  I only want the most current version so that I can continue playing on Realms with my grandson, yet have a prettier looking game for my 34" monitor.  The only mod I have is Optifine and I swapped its .jar file out for the current version in the mods folder.  How do I update Forge?  If there is a guide somewhere that I am missing please point me at it.

In the launcher, click Launch Options near the top right

Choose your profile from the list

Choose the forge version you want from the Versions dropdown. New installs are sometimes at the very bottom of the list, so check carefully.
