so im probably gonna sound really dumb, but listen

i've been playing this game for a very long time. maybe since around 2011. somehow, i havent ever made a forge server since then. i've used stuff like aternos, bought some stupid server package for $30 a month, etc. how do i make a forge server myself though for me to play with some friends with mods? pretty dumb i know, but id love your help.

Download the forge installer (or if you already have it downloaded, run it again)

Choose Install Server

Change the install directory at the bottom to where you want to install it (I'd make and choose a new folder)

Click OK

This will install the server in the specified folder.

From here, it can vary depending on your operating system, but essentially, you run the forge jar file from the folder you installed the server to. The first run will fail, it'll make you edit eula.txt and change false to true, but should run after that.

then, just drop mods into the mods folder and (re)start the server and they should load.

Inside your network, it will be the IP address of your computer, if it is on the same computer you play minecraft on, 127.0.0.1 will work.

Outside of your network, you will likely need to enable port forwarding for port 25565 on your router. Configuration can vary between types of routers, so consult your router mfrs website or instructions for information on how to forward ports.

Try another port or check what other program is using the default port.

Then once you get the server running, you will need to forward the port from your router to your computer. Check the website for whoever made the router for a support section, and search for port forward and you should find instructions on how to do it.
