I want to detect the damage source in minecraft and print the user's name. How can I do it only on client side? I have some ideas:detect hit sound, follow the health bar, watch for sudden moves but all these are just hacky. I read on a forum that getCombatTracker might do something but I am not sure even how to use it. Is there an event that I can use in the newer version of forge that would tell me the damage source or at least confirm the damage ?

Yeah, I've looked at this before and for some reason (mainly because vanilla Minecraft didn't need it), the packets that are sent for damage don't fully reflect damage source (unless it is a couple specific types that have a visual effect).

One way to work around this is to send your own custom packet. Handle the LivingHurtEvent or similar on server side and send a packet to the client with the information you need to help you display.

...which is unlikely the OP's wish, as many (many many many many) similar questions/requests are for client-side mods, almost always for Hypixel or similar.

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.
