Then please post your debug.log for a modern version of the game that you have this issue with.

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

Forge for 1.12.2 or earlier only works with Java 8, Minecraft is trying to start with Java 9 or later, I don't know much about the Linux Launcher, but by default the Windows launcher uses Java 8 (and an ancient version of it to boot).

Did you manually tell your launcher to use Java 11 or is that something the Linux Launcher does differently?

If you use the ppa package to install java 8, the default java can be set up automatically for you. https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/ubuntu/java

Other than that, you'll probably have to wade through a bunch of outdated information to find something that works.
