[1.8.9] Inserting my own ChannelHandler into minecraft channel pipeline doesn't work

Recommended Posts

So, as the title says, I'm inserting my own ChannelHandler (which extends ChannelInboundHandlerAdapter) into Minecraft.getMinecraft().getNetHandler().getNetworkManager().channel().pipeline(), but my handler's channelRead function never gets executed. I checked in minecraft code that I can get the proper channel (where are all of minecraft's ChannelHandlers) using method above, but apparently I can't. I don't know what am I doing wrong.

My main goal is to create a clientside mod that detects when the client doesn't get any packets from the server - that is, when a network lag occurs. (I'm currently writing it in my mod where I have all of my useful things - later I'll move it out to a separate mod.)

- Main mod class:

    public void init(FMLInitializationEvent e) {
        MinecraftForge.EVENT_BUS.register(new LagEventHandlers());

package com.paradoxical.automeow;

import net.minecraft.client.Minecraft;
import net.minecraft.util.EnumChatFormatting;
import net.minecraftforge.event.entity.EntityJoinWorldEvent;
import net.minecraftforge.fml.common.eventhandler.SubscribeEvent;
import net.minecraftforge.fml.common.gameevent.TickEvent;
import net.minecraftforge.fml.common.network.FMLNetworkEvent;

import java.util.Date;

public class LagEventHandlers {
    private int step = -30;

    public void onTick(TickEvent.ClientTickEvent e) {
        if (LagDetectorChannelHandler.c)
            if (step == 3) {
                step = 0;
                long lag = new Date().getTime() - LagDetectorChannelHandler.last;
                if (lag > 15 && LagDetectorChannelHandler.avg.get() <= 0.85D && LagDetectorChannelHandler.avg.alive()) {
                    Minecraft.getMinecraft().ingameGUI.setRecordPlaying(EnumChatFormatting.RED + "Received no packets from server for " +
                                    EnumChatFormatting.BOLD + lag + "ms", true); //Setting a message on action bar
            } else step++;

    private boolean joined = false;

    public void onEntityJoin(EntityJoinWorldEvent e) {
        if (!joined && e.entity.getName().equals(Minecraft.getMinecraft().getSession().getUsername())) {
            joined = true;
            if (!LagDetectorChannelHandler.a) {
                LagDetectorChannelHandler.a = true;
                        .pipeline().addLast("lag_handler", new LagDetectorChannelHandler());
                AutoMeow.log("Added a channel handler");
            LagDetectorChannelHandler.c = true;
            step = -30;

    public void onDisconnection(FMLNetworkEvent.ClientDisconnectionFromServerEvent e) {
        LagDetectorChannelHandler.c = false;
        step = 0;
        joined = false;

package com.paradoxical.automeow;

import io.netty.channel.ChannelHandlerContext;
import io.netty.channel.ChannelInboundHandlerAdapter;
import net.minecraft.client.Minecraft;
import net.minecraft.network.Packet;
import net.minecraft.util.ChatComponentText;

import java.util.Date;

public class LagDetectorChannelHandler extends ChannelInboundHandlerAdapter {
    //All of the variables are static for simplicity because this class is a singleton
    static long last = 0;
    static boolean c = false; //connected to server?
    static TimeAverage avg;
    static boolean a = false; //is this handler added?

    public void channelRead(ChannelHandlerContext ctx, Object msg) throws Exception {
        if (c) {
            Minecraft.getMinecraft().thePlayer.addChatMessage(new ChatComponentText((msg instanceof Packet) + " " + msg.getClass().getName() + " " + last)); //debug
            if (msg instanceof Packet && msg.getClass().getName().startsWith("S")) { //Is this packet a server to client packet?
                last = new Date().getTime();

        super.channelRead(ctx, msg);

    static void init() {
        avg = new TimeAverage(150);

    static void uninit() {
        last = 0;
        avg = null;

1.8.9 is no longer supported on this forum due to its age.

Please update to a modern version of Minecraft to receive support.

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

Logs (Most issues require logs to diagnose):

Please post logs using one of the following sites (Thank you Lumber Wizard for the list):

https://gist.github.com/100MB Requires member (Free)

https://pastebin.com/: 512KB as guest, 10MB as Pro ($$$)

https://hastebin.com/: 400KB

Do NOT use sites like Mediafire, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or a site that has a countdown before offering downloads.

What to provide:

...for Crashes and Runtime issues:

Minecraft 1.14.4 and newer:

Post debug.log

Older versions:

Please update...

...for Installer Issues:

Post your installer log, found in the same place you ran the installer

This log will be called either installer.log or named the same as the installer but with .log on the end

Note for Windows users:

Windows hides file extensions by default so the installer may appear without the .jar extension then when the .log is added the log will appear with the .jar extension

Where to get it:

Mojang Launcher: When using the Mojang launcher debug.log is found in .minecraft\logs.

Curse/Overwolf: If you are using the Curse Launcher, their configurations break Forge's log settings, fortunately there is an easier workaround than I originally thought, this works even with Curse's installation of the Minecraft launcher as long as it is not launched THROUGH Twitch:

  1. Make sure you have the correct version of Forge installed (some packs are heavily dependent on one specific build of Forge)
  2. Make a launcher profile targeting this version of Forge.
  3. Set the launcher profile's GameDir property to the pack's instance folder (not the instances folder, the folder that has the pack's name on it).
  4. Now launch the pack through that profile and follow the "Mojang Launcher" instructions above.

or alternately,

Fallback ("No logs are generated"):

If you don't see logs generated in the usual place, provide the launcher_log.txt from .minecraft

Server Not Starting:

If your server does not start or a command window appears and immediately goes away, run the jar manually and provide the output.

Reporting Illegal/Inappropriate Adfocus Ads:

Get a screenshot of the URL bar or copy/paste the whole URL into a thread on the General Discussion board with a description of the Ad.

Lex will need the Ad ID contained in that URL to report it to Adfocus' support team.

Posting your mod as a GitHub Repo:

When you have an issue with your mod the most helpful thing you can do when asking for help is to provide your code to those helping you. The most convenient way to do this is via GitHub or another source control hub.

When setting up a GitHub Repo it might seem easy to just upload everything, however this method has the potential for mistakes that could lead to trouble later on, it is recommended to use a Git client or to get comfortable with the Git command line. The following instructions will use the Git Command Line and as such they assume you already have it installed and that you have created a repository.

  1. Open a command prompt (CMD, Powershell, Terminal, etc).
  2. Navigate to the folder you extracted Forge’s MDK to (the one that had all the licenses in).
  3. Run the following commands:
    1. git init
    2. git remote add origin [Your Repository's URL]
      • In the case of GitHub it should look like: https://GitHub.com/[Your Username]/[Repo Name].git
    3. git fetch
    4. git checkout --track origin/master
    5. git stage *
    6. git commit -m "[Your commit message]"
    7. git push
  4. Navigate to GitHub and you should now see most of the files.
    • note that it is intentional that some are not synced with GitHub and this is done with the (hidden) .gitignore file that Forge’s MDK has provided (hence the strictness on which folder git init is run from)
  5. Now you can share your GitHub link with those who you are asking for help.

[Workaround line, please ignore]

    • Okay I got on the discord server and followed there steps and got it to start working, however the log is constantly being filled with this error code. It is creating additional copies of the config file, up to 5 copies.
    • I would like to force the pose of a living entity to a standing position (i.e. Pose.STANDING) when it is riding a certain vehicle. I have tried to call Entity#setPose every tick via LivingTickEvent, but the living entity remains in a sitting position. Here is my code: // I made it a low-priority event because I was wondering if the code should be executed at the end of each tick. @SubscribeEvent(priority = EventPriority.LOWEST) public static void livingTickEvent(LivingEvent.LivingTickEvent event) { LivingEntity livingEntity = event.getEntity(); if (!livingEntity.level.isClientSide && livingEntity.getVehicle() instanceof TheVehicle) { livingEntity.setPose(Pose.STANDING); } }   By the way, I am aware there is a setForcedPose method, but it's only for the Player class.
    • I am trying to get a Private Vault Hunters 3rd edition up and running. The server launched fine before I pasted the Vault+Hunters+3rd+Edition-Update-10.0.1_Server-Files Contents into the file I made for the server info. Then after I pasted it I get the log information in the spoiler. I don't understand what I'm looking at. I'm using Forge 1.18.2, I also downloaded the most recent version of JDK.
    • Hey, my friends put together a custom modpack to use and asked me to set up a server to run it. Problem is, they didn't think to log which mods where client side only and which worked server side. Naturally, I only found this out when I actually attempted to run said server. There's quite a long list of them and, frankly, I have no idea which are causing the problem. I just run servers and install modpacks, not curate them. If anyone could help me identify the problem and what's causing the error, it would be greatly appreciated.   To make things a bit easier, I'm running the server in a docker container on a Ubuntu 20.04 server installation. Also, I'm using Java 17 and Forge ver 1.19.2 release 43.2.8 as that is the same version as the modpack, so everything should be working. Again, any help would be really appreciated. latest log: https://pastebin.com/f95NC0X7 All mods installed: https://pastebin.com/xy8d55kJ
    • I'm trying to install Forge for 1.12.2. The installer runs properly and says it installed forged succesfully, but when I go into the launcher there is no Forge profile and forge isn't in the version list when cresting a custom profile. In the versions folder in .minecraft the forge 1.12.2 folder is there, but it only has the .json file, it seems that the installer is not actually getting the .jar file. I tried with both the recommended and latest installers. I also tried downloading the universal .jar directly and pasting it into the versions folder but that didn't work either.   Installer log: JVM info: Oracle Corporation - 1.8.0_371 - 25.371-b11 java.net.preferIPv4Stack=true Found java version 1.8.0_371 Extracting json Considering minecraft client jar Downloading libraries Found 0 additional library directories Considering library net.minecraftforge:forge:1.12.2-   File exists: Checksum validated.
