Subscribe to the ItemTossEvent.

Use ItemEvent#getEntityItem (ItemEvent is the super class of ItemTossEvent) to get the EntityItem thrown.

1. Do not follow tutorials on YouTube, especially TechnoVision (previously called Loremaster) and HarryTalks, due to their promotion of bad practice and usage of outdated code.

Okay, so how do you do that exactly?

 

I have been trying to make it work for a while now, and it still won't do anything. Here's my current code to tell the player when they drop anything

@Mod(Reference.MODID)
public class DroppedItem
{
	@SubscribeEvent
	public void onItemTossEvent(ItemTossEvent itemTossEvent) {
		Minecraft.getInstance().player.sendChatMessage("you dropped something");
	}
}

The annotation on an event bus subscriber should be @EventBusSubscriber.

Also make the onItemTossEvent static (refer to this picture for more explanation on when event bus subscriber should be static).

That is going to crash on a server. Hopefully you are only using it temporarily for debugging purposes.
