After not playing Minecraft (Java Edition on Ubuntu 18.04 64bit) for a year I just installed the new launcher which works fine in vanilla starting up versions 1.14.4 and 1.13.2 without any problems. Then I installed Forge 1.13.2-forge.25.0.219 as well as Forge 1.14.4-28.1.0, but with both options the launcher crashes with Error Game crashed An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Any idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

You must use Java 8, 9, or 10. 11 can't be supported due to a core library breaking compat with Java 8 (the version Mojang ships with the game) when it added support for Java 11

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

Thanks for this answer. Since I need Java 11 for other purposes on my computer, is there a way to tell Minecraft which Java version to use?

The launcher seems to have this option, but I don't know what to put in the field for the java executable. Currently I have Java 8 and Java 11 installed as follows:

java-1.11.0-openjdk-amd64      1111       /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.11.0-openjdk-amd64
java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64       1081       /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64

Specifying the path /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64 in the launcher field for the forge installation produces a rather confusing error message:

Unable lo locate the Java runtime
Error details: Success
Filename on disk: java-8-openjdk-amd64
Path: /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64
Exists: Directory

Also, the vanilla versions of Minecraft seem to work perfectly fine with the Java 11 (it is just the Forge versions that produce the error).

Perfect. I got the Forge version to run by manually switching my Java version to 8 with the updates-alternative configuration tool earlier this morning, but very much prefer the option diesieben07 gave in his answer.

Problem solved. Thanks a lot!
