I want to make a block that has a light mounted on one side of it. The problem is I do not know how to only light the area in front of the side the torch is facing. Can someone give me an idea or is this even possible to pull off?

Minecraft's lighting system does not support this unfortunately.

Thanks. I might request this be made a feature in minecraft.

As a workaround, you could create an invisible light block that spawns nearby when the directional block is placed. You'd need to spend some time polishing it to make it seamless and handle odd cases, but it may create an effect similar to what you want.

I'm eager to learn and am prone to mistakes. Don't hesitate to tell me how I can improve.
