I'm not very experienced with Forge – my skill is limited to basic installation and setting up mods.

I wanted to try a 3rd party client for Minecraft, MultiMC. It doesn't support installing Forge, but it does support installing a custom instance through a .zip file.

Would it be possible to create a new instance, like Forge would do with the vanilla launcher, and then manually install to that instance? If so, how would one do that?

We only support/endorse the official Mojang launcher here.

Any others that require you to enter your credentials are not to be trusted.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

MultiMC does support installing Forge automatically from the versions page of a modpack. Create an instance for the version of Minecraft you want forge for, then click the edit instance button, and the version tab on the side has options for Forge, Fabric, and LiteLoader. I would suggest next time bringing it to the MultiMC forums since it is a launcher based question and not directly Forge related. (You can manually install Forge to a MultiMC instance, however I recommend against this.)
