Hello all!

It's been a while since I posted (5 years in fact!), and I'm looking at trying to get back into modding.

Considering that a lot has changed since I stopped modding a lot, and it's a little hard to pick a Forge version to work with, I just wanted to ask from a developer standpoint what is the best Minecraft version to make mods for in 2020?

The main factors I'm looking at is stability, ease of development, player base, etc.

Thanks so much!

If you're looking to pick a version and stick with it you're not going to have a good time.

Minecraft and Forge are ever-evolving pieces of software and we only provide user/modder support for the most recent major version and the most recent old version (currently 1.16.X and 1.15.X, respetively).

Most people who picked a version and stuck with it are in one of two places:

  • 1.12.2 was the latest version for a long time before 1.13 came out and some people still complain that their favorites haven't been ported and they refuse to leave them behind and find new mods.
  • 1.8.9 was the last version before 1.9 changed combat to not favor auto-clickers and some people can't get over that

Note that we still get support requests from both of these groups even though we repeatedly say that we only support modern versions

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

In terms of that, usually older versions will have more documentation (with the number of archived forum posts), but newer versions are easier to work with, such as with the new Deferred Registry system. That's probably obvious, but it's worth mentioning.

Thanks for the responses guys!

I think i'll pick a newer version to work with. It might not have as big a player-base but it sounds like the API will be a lot better to work with and it'll be easier to keep it up to date rather than stagnating on 1.12.

Thanks again!
