complete noob at modding minecraft

hey, i'm a complete novice when it comes to making minecraft mods, but want to make one anyway, can someone link a relevant non Mcreator tutorial series or something along those lines please. i figure the easiest way to learn is by doing because reading the documentation isn't getting me very far on my own.
