Hey 👋

I've just started toying around with Forge 1.16.5 and tried adding items first. So far so good.

But I wanted to make an item a bit more customizable than normal: I want it to be able to be registered multiple times with different names based on the config.

What I did was pretty simple, and "worked". Before  getting in the config, I just tried with a List in the main class containing each different name, and then I looped through that list to then register multiple times a new instance of my item with the specified name;

Then, I got into configuration. I was able to get it to work, and make it return the correct values, unfortunately, I realized that it didn't work as I would have expected it to.

After trying this, it always took the default config values, even if I changed the config. I concluded that configs were registered after items, and tried searching some sort of bypass. I found a GitHub issue where someone asked something similar, and got answers saying that this wasn't possible and that config should not be used to create items.

So, here's my problem, I want to create an item multiple times based on the config, but I can't load the config in time to create the items.

Is there another way to do it? I saw those ItemVariants things https://github.com/TheGreyGhost/MinecraftByExample/blob/master/src/main/java/minecraftbyexample/mbe11_item_variants/ItemVariants.java but I'm not sure if it really is what I need...

Maybe I should consider using an external config instead of Forge's ? so I can load it before, which could solve my problem, but is there really no other way?

Thanks for taking the time to read, hopefully someone will be able to help me =)

First off, don't. Config based registry entries are EXPLICITLY designed to be a PITA because you SHOULD NOT be doing it.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.
