I can't help you as I am in the same boat.  Kind of stuck on a mod until I can learn the mobs again.  Had it going in 1.4.7, but not so much in 1.6.2. . . If anyone has an up to date tutorial on how to make a very basic mob and get them to render, it would be very appreciated.  I think I just need the new render stuff.

The only major change is the RenderYOURMOB class. The texture directory is now

writen there, and THERE IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT WAY OF RENDERING!

For those of you who have "invisible" mobs. HERE:

package assets.cutiesmod.render;

import net.minecraft.client.model.ModelBase;
import net.minecraft.client.renderer.entity.RenderLiving;
import net.minecraft.entity.Entity;
import net.minecraft.util.ResourceLocation;
import assets.cutiesmod.common.CutiesMod;
import assets.cutiesmod.entity.EntityMaleCutie;
import cpw.mods.fml.relauncher.Side;
import cpw.mods.fml.relauncher.SideOnly;

@SideOnly(Side.CLIENT)
public class RenderYOURMOB extends RenderLiving
{

    public static final ResourceLocation Texture = new ResourceLocation(YOURMOD.modid, "/textures/entity/YOURMOB.png");
    public RenderYOURMOB(ModelBase par1ModelBase, float par2)
    {
        super(par1ModelBase, par2);
    }

    protected ResourceLocation func_110832_a(EntityYOURMOB par1EntityYOURMOB)
    {
        return Texture;
    }

    protected ResourceLocation func_110775_a(Entity par1Entity)
    {
        return this.func_110832_a((EntityYOURMOB)par1Entity);
    }
}

public class RenderYOURMOB extends RenderLiving
{

    public static final ResourceLocation texture = new ResourceLocation(YOURMOD.modid, "textures/entity/YOURMOB.png");
    public RenderYOURMOB(ModelBase par1ModelBase, float par2)
    {
        super(par1ModelBase, par2);
    }

@Override
    protected ResourceLocation func_110775_a(Entity par1Entity)
    {
        return texture;
    }
}

Would be better, just saying ;)
