New user unable to post to #minecraftforge

I created and verified the nickname "blockly" on esper.net.  I am able to lurk on #minecraftforge but not post to it.  Here is a sample transcript:

/join #minecraftforge

I am having trouble setting a (hover) name for a new block I created...

I have tried with several irc clients, but none work.  Any advice?
