Recently when using a custom timer I made. Whenever I look at it I feel it is way too resource heavy so I was wondering how you guys made your timers?

Currently I make a class called timer and an abstract class called TimerEvent which makes an new thread then sleeps for the time set then does the code then removes the thread. However making a new thread every time is very resource heavy.

Hi

Whenever I need a delay, I base it on the number of ticks that have elapsed - i.e. register a TickHandler which gets called every tick (1/20 of a second) and then just decrements a tickcounter each time until it reaches zero, then execute my code.  No threads required.

For 1.6.4 this was as described here http://greyminecraftcoder.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/forge-techniques-events.html

For 1.7.2 it has been replaced by a new event (which I forget the name of, but shouldn't be too hard to find).

If you need more help let us know?

Thread sleep should never be used for delayed events.  As pausing the game wouldn't pause the timer.

Always always always use the tick event or onUpdate method of an entity.

It doesn't pause the game because it is in a new thread. But it isn't a good way to do it either.

Hes not saying it would pause the game, hes saying if YOU paused it the coubter would keep going.

What Saxon said.  If you pause the game your "timer" would keep counting down.
