I can't seem to get Forge to install, continually getting 'You must run the version 1.7.2 manually at least once' error when using the windows installer.

I have set up my Profile to 1.72, and have opened a game, then exited

I have tried using both the forge-1.7.2-10.12.1.1075 and forge-1.7.2-10.12.1.1060 installers with same error popping up.

I have deleted my entire instance of .Minecraft from my Appdata/Roaming folder, reinstalled and tried from scratch running 1.72 and still get the "must run the version manually" error.

This is driving me bonkers...what am I doing wrong?

It throws that error if it can not find .minecraft/versions/1.7.2/1.7.2.jar

So you need to verify that exists and you're pointing the installer at the correct folder.

Perhaps some screenshots to show us what you're doing may help.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

Thanks. It appears to have both the 1.7.2 directory and the jar file inside.

I didn't understand what you meant by "pointing the installer". I simply downloaded to desktop and attempted to run, then got the error. Just noticed however, that the installer was trying to run against my user name vs user instance I was on (my son's). I have admin rights, so while on his Windows user login, I had to sign in w/my admid account to allow the installer to run. Noticed that it was pointing to Users/Steve/... instead of Users/Chris/... so I was using the wrong path. DOH!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Appears to have installed fine now!
