Damaging An Item?

I am trying to damage an item when you right click with it and i have tried doing using the method that is issued when you break a block and this has not worked if anyone can help me with this that would be great.

Also this is in 1.7.10

    Not currently but all i have is the normal sword files plus the onItemRightClick() running ItemStack.damageItem() with all of the respective arguments of course.
