So everytime I try to download forge 1.8.9, it does not download. Instead it dowloads some weird stuff on word pad. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! [Yes I tried other versions to.]  :'(

When I click install, instead of a java file a word pad file downloads. Then when I open the word pad it has like a 100 pages of codes or something. I tried multiple times. Updated my java and everything but nothing works.

Are you sure you are not clicking on an advertisement?

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

Exception: If you do not understand Java, I WILL NOT HELP YOU and your thread will get locked.

DO NOT PM ME WITH PROBLEMS. No help will be given.

What's the full name (including extension) of the file you downloaded? It should be viewable in your browser's download list.

I suspect you've somehow set WordPad as the default application of whatever file type you downloaded. All downloads except the changelog are some sort of binary file, so they'd look like a bunch of random characters if opened in a text editor/word processor like WordPad.

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.

YES! That's the problem. But I am confused how I should fix it.

Right-click on the file, properties, and set the default application to windows executable or something like that

I did just that, i clicked more options and which do I click. I don't have a specific one. All of them are word pad, note pad, microsoft or media player.

What's the full name (including extension) of the file you downloaded?

What's the answer to this? If it's a .jar, you just have to associate .jars with Java again. If it's a .exe, you'll have to do some RegEdit witchcraft like what Mrredstone231 suggested.

EDIT: For example, if it's a .jar:

Did I help you? Don't be afraid to give that 'thank you' button a good smack for me!

It's been looking at me weirdly for a while now.
