[1.10.2] [SOLVED] Getting the RayTraceResult and BlockPos on Physical Server?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hey!

So there is a method called EntityPlayer::rayTrace(...) and it contains the annotation @SideOnly(Side.CLIENT), does that mean that I cannot use this method when running physical server?

And if so, what is an alternative that can get the player's RayTraceResult and BlockPos (block's position that the player is looking at).

The reason being is that I want to make a command that can teleport the player to the position of the block they are looking at.

Is there any alternative way to accomplish this?

Any suggestions and help are welcome.

Thanks!

Correct. Also, you should be concerned about logical sides, not physical.

Copy and paste the method into your own code, assuming it does not reference further client-side-only code. In all likelyhood it forwards a call off to World#rayTrace (or similar name) and you can use that.

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

Exception: If you do not understand Java, I WILL NOT HELP YOU and your thread will get locked.

DO NOT PM ME WITH PROBLEMS. No help will be given.

But if I use it in execute(MinecraftServer server, ICommandSender sender, String args[]) throws CommandException, which is a logical server method, will I need to send packets or will World::rayTrace be server-side? In other words, is World::rayTrace client or server-side? Because I need to then get the BlockPos and then make that block air, like so:

public void execute(MinecraftServer server, ICommandSender sender, String args[]) throws CommandException
{
  EntityPlayer playerIn = getCommandSenderAsPlayer(sender);
  World worldIn = playerIn.worldObj;
  RayTraceResult trace = worldIn.rayTrace(...) // this is client or server side?
  BlockPos pos = trace.getBlockPos();
  worldIn.setBlockToAir(pos);
}

Thanks!

A simple glace through your IDE should have shown you that the World::rayTraceBlocks (there's three of 'em) are not annotated with any SideOnly.
The reason EntityPlayer::rayTrace is Client-Side only, is because that is only where it is used. Way back (in 1.3?) when Minecraft split the Server & Client logic, it was determined that the server only needs that which it uses.

Anything that could have been common, but was only used Client-Side, was forced to become Client-Side only, during this split.

Does that mean that World::rayTraceBlocks(...) is server-side? So I can do this?:

    @Override
    public void execute(MinecraftServer server, ICommandSender sender, String[] args) throws CommandException
    {
        EntityPlayer playerIn = getCommandSenderAsPlayer(sender);
        Vec3d posVec = new Vec3d(playerIn.posX, playerIn.posY + playerIn.getEyeHeight(), playerIn.posZ);
        Vec3d lookVec = playerIn.getLookVec();
        World worldIn = playerIn.worldObj;
        RayTraceResult trace = worldIn.rayTraceBlocks(posVec, posVec.add(lookVec.scale(100))); // or is this client-side?
        BlockPos pos = trace.getBlockPos();
    }

Should have told you enough.

If you're still paranoid about sides, launch server, launch client, connect with "localhost" and test.
If you crash, then no.
