Look at some vanilla Blocks that implement this behavior, the BlockChest has this functionality.

Quick tip: If you're trying to implement some functionality, look at how vanilla minecraft does it (if possible). You have to manually implement a lot of functionality that you'd think was implemented by default

Well... If your burn time is 0 at the start, then isBurning will always return false, which will cause the furnace to not smelt (according to the logic in your update method).

You have to manually implement that functionality.

Why do you still have code referring to fuel? Haven't you change it so that the furnace smelts when some blocks are in place? Clean up your code, as these unnecessary code might cause unwanted behaviors.

I haven't updated the code since what I had in my first post besides registering the TE now, the return this.burnTime > 0; returns true if the burnTime is greater than 0, and I still have the fuel code in there because I am trying to make the block function with a block formation around it before removing the fuel so I can make sure it works well

1. Deleting part of a feature can and will cause unwanted behaviors.

You can always revert back to your previous commit in case something went wrong, so you might as well delete your fuel related code.

Right, and the progress bar of your furnace will never move because the TE thinks the furnace is not working.

No, that is not the desired behavior.

According to your code's logic, the isWorking method should determine whether the conditions are met for the furnace to work; the burnTime is completely irrelevant to this.

3. Clean up the logic in your code. I assume that you copied the code from some (poor) tutorial without knowing how it actually works, resulting in most of your code being messy and redundant. Always make sure you understand the code line-by-line before using it.

I did my best trying to understand what you’ve stated here, and assume that you are keeping the fuel code so that you might revert to using fuels if the block formation idea does not work out.

What I’m trying to tell you is to delete all your fuel related code and try accomplish the block formation idea first; if that does not work out, then revert to the commit of your fuel related code.

So yeah, delete your fuel related code, as there is no reason to keep them at this point.

Also, clean up your code, as a clearer logic will fix most of the problems you've stated.

Besides logical errors, also optimize your code. For example:

public float getNonEnergyForgeExperience(ItemStack stack)
	{
		for (Entry<ItemStack, Float> entry : this.experienceList.entrySet())
		{
			if(this.compareItemStacks(stack, (ItemStack)entry.getKey()))
			{
				return ((Float)entry.getValue()).floatValue();
			}
		}
		return 0.0F;
	}

The point of having a Map is so that you don't have to do this.

The point of having a Map is so that you don't have to do this.

@Blue_Atlas a bigger problem here is that ItemStack doesn't have a hashCode() or equals() implementation, making it unsuitable as the key for a Map; adding itemstack1 to the map, and then looking up by a different itemstack2 object will fail, even if itemstack1 and itemstack2 have exactly the same item/metadata/NBT.

To do this correctly, you need to either use a wrapper class which correctly implements hashCode() and equals(), or take a look at the TCustomHashMap from Trove, which is included with Minecraft (todo: check if 1.13.2 still includes Trove).

Posted (edited)
private final Table<ItemStack, ItemStack, ItemStack> smeltingList = HashBasedTable.<ItemStack, ItemStack, ItemStack>create();
private final Map<ItemStack, Float> experienceList = Maps.<ItemStack, Float>newHashMap();

@Blue_Atlas At this point I would just recommend making another entry class instead of trying to do everything with Map, then store recipes in a list of entries for the following reason:

1. Your recipe gives experience, and using a separate map for experience is messy.

2. In your current code, you are iterating through the map to find the appropriate entry.

3. Custom entries are more flexible so that you can include more information.

alright, I figured out how to make my block work and decided to transfer it over to needing fuel unless a certain block is in a location near it but it does not update to the burning state texture when burning using block. Where do I need to change it to make it change the texture?
