Ehm, don‘t understand your question 100% but you can simply use a shapeless recipe and use your item as a ingredient, or not? Or try to use a event and when the player hold the new item you add the old item in the inventory of the player.

That's what the containerItem thing I mentioned is for. It leaves an item in the crafting table after being crafted, which is what they seem to want. It's also used for other things, like potion bottles and water buckets.

I'm eager to learn and am prone to mistakes. Don't hesitate to tell me how I can improve.

package com.kidmichael8.orex.item;

import com.kidmichael8.orex.OreX.OreXItemGroup;

import net.minecraft.item.Item;
import net.minecraft.item.ItemStack;

public class chisel_item extends Item
{

	public chisel_item() {
		super(new Properties().group(OreXItemGroup.instance).defaultMaxDamage(10));
	}
	@Override
	public boolean hasContainerItem(ItemStack stack) {
		return true;
	}
	@Override
	public ItemStack getContainerItem(ItemStack itemStack) {
		final ItemStack copy = itemStack.copy();
		if (copy.attemptDamageItem(1, Item.random, null)) {
			copy.shrink(1);
			copy.setDamage(0);
		}
		return copy;
	}

}

is this how you do it?

Use the containerItem method in your item's properties.

this is the new code for my item

event.getRegistry().register(new Item(new Item.Properties().group(OreXItemGroup.instance).maxStackSize(1).defaultMaxDamage(10).containerItem(chisel_item)).setRegistryName("chisel_item"));

and this is the up date

package com.kidmichael8.orex.item;

import com.kidmichael8.orex.OreX.OreXItemGroup;

import net.minecraft.item.Item;
import net.minecraft.item.ItemStack;

public class Chiselitem extends Item
{

	public Chiselitem() {
		super(new Properties().group(OreXItemGroup.instance).defaultMaxDamage(10));
	}
	@Override
	public boolean hasContainerItem(ItemStack stack) {
		return true;
	}
	@Override
	public ItemStack getContainerItem(ItemStack itemStack) {
		final ItemStack copy = itemStack.copy();
		if (copy.attemptDamageItem(1, Item.random, null)) {
			copy.shrink(1);
		}
		return copy;
	}

}

is this good?

And this is just so i can learn how to mod so I did not see the problem.

Learn Java basic:

event.getRegistry().register(new ChiselItem().setRegistryName("chisel_item");

Ok, Java is really important if you want to mod (remember to learn Java 8, not more modern versions).
